This week I received the following question: What information do I need to keep track of after an Indiana car accident? This is a very important question. Why? Because often it is the records that make or break an accident case. Many people believe that the insurance company or the body shop or the police will keep information about the accident, this is just not true.
In order to have the best chance at a just and fair settlement, you should be keeping a clear and organized record of the following:
- The Indiana crash report or case number, including the date and time of the crash.
- Names and contact information of the other driver and any witnesses.
- Any photographs or notes from the scene of the accident, including a description of what happened before, during, and immediately after you were hurt.
- All medical bills that have been sent to your home. When healthcare providers learn that you've been involved in an accident, they try not to bill insurance. It is important that you make sure your doctors and hospital bill your insurance because there are strict time limits.
- Any phone calls, emails, or other correspondence you have had with your doctor, the other driver's insurance company or your own insurance company.
- Your time away from work and any lost income that you have had because of the accident.
- Your travel expenses for medical care.
Keep everything together in the same place, and try to write down as much you remember while it's still fresh in your mind. You may never need this information but if you do, it will be readily available if you do the work up front. Many people say that they will never forget what happened in the accident, however, you would be surprised at how fast the details can fade—and how important the specific facts will be later on.
