Guy DiMartino Oct. 31, 2014

NW Indiana personal injury lawyer discusses a recent newspaper article describing a truck crash on I-65 that killed 2 people.

The Northwest Indiana Times recently reported that a semi-truck driver and his passenger were killed in a crash on I-65 in Jasper County. The accident occurred where I-65 was reduced to one lane. Traffic was slowing because of the merge and the tractor-trailer driver did not realize that traffic was slowing to a stop and crashed into the back of another big rig. Our condolences go out to the families of those who lost their lives in this crash.

In 2009, Indiana reported 10,542 traffic crashes involving semi or other large trucks. In 82 of these reported accidents at least 1 person died because of injuries sustained in the crash. Contrary to popular belief, accidents involving semi-trucks occurred more frequently during the weekdays and during daylight hours. The primary factor reported in these crashes were associated with the driver as opposed to the mechanical functioning of the truck. Other factors including speeding, driver distraction and fatigue. Alcohol impairment was more prevalent in car crashes than semi crashes. Trucking law if very complex because it is heavy regulated with multiple sets of rules and regulations.
