Laporte Indiana Medical Malpractice Lawyer | Risks Medical Tourism

Guy DiMartino Oct. 31, 2014

LaPorte Indiana medical malpractice lawyer discusses medical malpractice and medical tourism.

Over the last few years there has been an increase in medical tourism. People can travel to India or Mexico and receive medical care for a fraction of the cost. A recent article in the journal Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery-Global Open notes that many folks are traveling abroad for plastic surgery procedures. For instance, breast implants costs about $6,000 in the US. The procedure can be performed in India for about $2,200, which is one-third the cost.

The authors note the following:

The low cost of care resulting from inexpensive labor and virtual nonexistence of malpractice liability draws many patients seeking less costly elective procedures such as cosmetic surgery…

The article goes on to list the risks for patients undergoing medical tourism, which include:

  1. Risk of travel after surgery

  2. Exposure to foreign pathogens (bugs)

  3. Privacy is jeopardized by cross border exchange of medical records

  4. Lack of legal recourse in the event of malpractice

  5. Distance, unfamiliarity of surroundings, culture and communication issues

Over the years I have seen some horrible results after cosmetic surgery. I handled a case where a patient died after liposuction because of infection and other cases where patients developed terrible scarring.

Nobody goes into surgery thinking that something is going to go wrong but you really have to ask yourself if you're willing to take the risk before traveling overseas for a medical procedure. Imagine having a problem with anesthesia, developing a ravenous infection, or having some other complication that could require weeks of hospitalization in a foreign country. The hospitalization would not be covered by health insurance.
