Indiana Medical Malpractice Insurance Carrier Has Good Second Quarter

Guy DiMartino Oct. 31, 2014

Northwest Indiana medical malpractice lawyer discusses ProAssurance's 2nd quarter net profits.

ProAssurance is a nationwide medical malpractice insurance carrier that writes insurance policies for doctors and hospitals in 42 states. In Indiana, ProAssurance has a good bit of the doctors' market. A recent report noted that ProAssurance Corp., an Alabama based medical malpractice insurance company, posted $60.1 million dollars in net income for the quarter ending September 30, 2012. The second quarter income was up about $13 million dollars from the same quarter in 2011.

Indiana is a great state for medical malpractice insurance carriers to write business because the insurance companies' risks are a known quantity. This is because in Indiana the medical malpractice insurance company is only on the hook for $250,000 in proceeds. If the value of an injured person's case is greater than the $ 250,000, the Indiana Patient Compensation Funds pays the rest up to the $1.25 million dollar cap on damages.
