Don’t Stage a Northwest Indiana Car Accident to Make Some Extra Cash

Guy DiMartino Oct. 31, 2014

Don't stage a Northwest Indiana car accident to make some extra cash because you will end up in jail.

We have been in an economic downturn for almost 3 years. Cash is tight. Somebody suggests that you should stage a car accident and injuries to collect insurance money. Should you do it? No. You might be saying to yourself – this guy is crazy. Why would somebody be so stupid as to stage a car accident? Insurance companies are too smart for this. Well you're right. Insurance companies are too smart for this and eventually people who stage car accidents to commit insurance fraud get caught because they become more greedy and sloppy.

CASE IN POINT. Daphyne Thomas of Markham, Illinois allegedly hatched a plan with some other folks to stage a car accident in 2007 so she could collect money from State Farm. According to the Times, Thomas and several others chose a wooded area with no surveillance cameras in Hammond. Thomas and her children got out of her car, watched another car hit the back of her car and then got back into the car. According to the report, the conspirators lied and said that the driver who caused the accident had blacked out. The folks were taken to the hospital by ambulance and faked their injuries. This alleged fraud ring ran these scams from 2007-2009 and involved about 5 insurance companies. Thomas could face 60 years in prison and a $750,000 fine if she is found guilty.

So is it worth it to stage an accident for a few thousand dollars when you can go to prison for 60 years? Don't think so.
