Michigan City, Indiana medical malpractice lawyer discusses malpractice in the emergency room.
Hospital emergency room mistakes account for a high majority of medical malpractice claims filed against hospitals. This information was laid out in a recent article in the Wall Street Journal.
The article gives the following examples: (1) an 18 year old patient comes to the emergency room with a fever is evaluated and released and later dies of sepsis; (2) a 42 year old presents with chest pain and dies a couple hours after discharge from a heart attack; and (3) a 9 year old girl is diagnosed with a belly ache and later her appendix ruptures.
The gist of the article is that emergency rooms have a tendency to be chaotic and many times there is a lack of communication between the doctors, nurses and other hospital departments that run tests. The study noted that while some errors happen because the doctor misjudges symptoms, in almost all cases of missed or delayed diagnosis, an important piece of information (data)was not available when the diagnosis was made.
In an effort to deal with these problems, hospitals are trying to overhaul their triage system and suggest that all healthcare providers involved in a patient's care actually talk to each other before discharge.
Some of the most common misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis conditions in the emergency room include: (1) heart attacks; (2) pulmonary emboli; (3) appendicitis; (4) abdominal aortic aneurysm; (5) strokes in younger patients; and (6) meningitis.
