Northwest Indiana personal injury lawyer discusses the common causes of pedestrian accidents

Northwest Indiana pedestrian accidents can result in serious injuries. We all know that pedestrians, like motorcyclists, have nothing to protect them if they are hit by a car or truck. If a vehicle hits a pedestrian h/she is 100% exposed. Severe injuries resulting from a car or truck on pedestrian accident can lead to long term physical and mental problems for the injured person. Almost every part of the pedestrian's body can be injured if they are struck by a car or truck. These injuries can include broken bones, injured necks, backs, knees, hips, shoulders and internal organ damage.

The most common causes of motor vehicle on pedestrian accidents in Northwest Indiana are drivers that are distracted, drunk, or speeding. The fault however does not always fall upon the driver. A careless pedestrian can just as easily be the cause of a Northwest Indiana car accident. Regardless of who is at fault for pedestrian accidents, your Michigan City personal injury lawyer has put together a few tips for pedestrians to help avoid these accidents that cause serious injuries.

  • Don't Jaywalk :  Jaywalking is defined as crossing “a street carelessly or in an illegal manner so as to be endangered by traffic.”   If you jaywalk a driver won't be looking for someone to cross the street if they have the right of way at that moment. For example, crossing the street in the middle because you are too lazy to walk to the crosswalk is a good way to get hit a car or truck.
  • Look Both Ways Before You Cross :  Failing to look both ways before crossing and crossing in between two parked cars are the most common ways that pedestrians are hit by cars.  Before stepping a foot into the roadway, a pedestrian has to look both ways to make sure there is sufficient time to cross the road. To help avoid a Northwest Indiana pedestrian accident you should LOOK BOTH WAYS! Additionally, when you are crossing the street pay attention to your surroundings with your eyes and ears because many times driver's just look right past pedestrians because they are distracted.  If you pay attention, you may be able to get out of the way of a driver who is not paying attention to his/her surroundings.
  • Stay Out of the Street : As a general rule, a pedestrian should use a sidewalk or a swale when walking alongside a road.  However, there will be times when you need to cross the street. When walking alongside the roadway, think about walking against traffic, it will make you more visible to oncoming traffic.  Many pedestrians are injured when walking with traffic on the side of the road because the car or truck drifts over the fog line.

Even if you are the most careful pedestrian around, you can be hit by a car when walking in Northwest Indiana.  If you have any questions about a motor vehicle on pedestrian car accident, please call our office at (219) 874-4878.
