Michigan City Indiana accident lawyer discusses the deaths of 3 men in alcohol related car crashes and the effects that alcohol has on drivers.

The News Dispatch reported that three men were recently killed in a LaPorte County car accidents.  According to the article, the driver in one accident had a blood alcohol level of .408 percent, which is approximately five times the legal limits.  In a second accident, the driver had a .25 percent blood alcohol level, which is just over three times the legal limit.  All three men who passed away were not wearing their seat belts and the drivers of the two vehicles were driving at unsafe speeds.

The Criminal Justice Institute just released the 2010 traffic crash data.  In 2010, 4,907 crashes and 130 fatal crashes involved alcohol-impaired drivers.  Drunk drivers are 3.8 times more likely to crashed into fixed objects on or near the road and 5.1 times more likely to run off the road than non-drunk drivers.   There a number of reasons why drinking and driving is so dangerous:

  • Drunk drivers lose their judgment
  • Drunk drivers lose depth perception
  • Drunk drivers lose reaction time
  • Drunk drivers lose higher cortical control

Loss of these faculties coupled with the fact that cars and trucks are dangerous, powerful, fast machines sets up the perfect storm.  Let's try to keep our Northwest Indiana roads safe and do not drink and drive.  If you are planning on drinking, designate a driver or find another ride.   Indiana car accident law is complex and when alcohol is involved in the accident, it becomes more complex.  If you have any questions about a Northwest car accident, please call our office at  (219) 874-4878.
