LaPorte County car accident lawyer at michigancityinjurylaw.com analyzes a recent rollover accident on I-65 in Jasper County, Indiana.

The Post-trib recently ran a story reporting on a Valparaiso man who rolled his vehicle on I-65 in Jasper County and only received minor injuries.  We are happy that the guy escaped serious injury.  The driver was certainly lucky as the picture below highlights the severity of the crash.  Many people are not so lucky.  The facts of this crash highlight one of the most common scenarios causing a motor vehicle rollover, and that is, overcorrection of the vehicle.

The facts of the I-65 Rollover Crash

  • Driver is heading straight down I-65
  • Something is on the road could be a deer, tire or any other object
  • Driver swerves
  • Driver loses control over vehicle
  • Vehicle spins or rolls over

Analysis of the I-65 Rollover Crash

As stated above, this is the most common scenario involving a rollover even if a tire blows out.  The reason the vehicle flips is because of physics.  In this story, the vehicle is traveling a decent rate of speed in one direction and then the steering wheel is either turned to the right or the left sharply.  This changes the center of gravity of the vehicle and the acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle causes the driver to lose control and either spin or flip.  As a general rule, when confronted with these situations, especially if it's a piece of tire on the roadway or an animal, it is slow as safely as possible and do not swerve.

It is human instinct that causes us to swerve in these situations, and you cannot fault the driver; however, when a vehicle is traveling in one direction at a decent rate of speed and has to swerve, there is a good chance the driver will lose control of their vehicle.
