Indiana Car Insurance Rates Are Some Of The Lowest In The Nation

Northwest Indiana car accident lawyer discusses a recent survey of Indiana car insurance rates.

Car insurance is very important. It has one purpose and that is to protect the driver of a car on Indiana's roads. If you have the right insurance it can protect the driver of the vehicle if they cause an accident and injure the other driver. The proper insurance can also protect the driver and occupants of a car that are injured because somebody else caused the accident. Many times folks do not realize that they do not have enough car insurance until after something has happened and they are at risk.

The Survey Method

A hypothetical 40 year old male, who commuted 12 miles each way to work, and had a clean driving record was priced out for the following car insurance coverage:

  •  Bodily injury $100,000/$300,000 – Indiana's minimum is only $25,000/$50,000;
  • Property Damage $50,000 – Indiana's minimum is only $10,000;
  • Collision & Comprehensive with a $500 deductible – not required under Indiana law but a lien holder (bank, credit union) may require;
  • Uninsured motorist coverage

This is more coverage than I see many folks carry who come into my office. The coverage was shopped to six large standard automobile insurance carriers including State Farm, Allstate, Farmers, Progressive, Nationwide and GEICO.

Indiana's average rate was the 8th lowest in the nation at $1,183.00 per year. One of the reason for Indiana's low rates is that the state is very protective of its insurance companies, and juries in some rural counties are very conservative with injury awards. As a whole, Indiana's residents are not as litigious as some other states. In the survey, Louisiana had the highest rates in the nation and Maine had the lowest rates.

It is very important to look at your insurance coverage before you get on the road, after an accident is too late to review your car insurance coverage.
