5 Signs of a Concussion

Posted by Guy DiMartino | Sep 27, 2016 | 0 Comments

One of the many dangerous factors to consider in the aftermath of a car accident is that not all injuries manifest themselves in an obvious way. If you fracture your fibula during a collision, you'll know immediately as a result of the pain. If you get a concussion, on the other hand, this revelation might not be as easily perceived.

There are five core signs of a concussion in particular that you need to be aware of so that you or a loved one can get the medical attention you need as quickly as possible.

Sign #1: General Difficulties

Even if you don't feel any pain after a car accident, you may have still received a concussion if you suddenly experience difficulty remembering events that have recently occurred, concentrating on a particular task at hand, or making decisions when asked by those around you. These are all warning signs that a concussion has occurred.

Sign #2: Pain

One of the most obvious signs of a concussion is a headache or neck pain that does not go away, regardless of how many pain killers you take or what you try to do. It is important to note that this pain does not have to be intense in nature – even a dull pain that you could easily ignore can still be a sign of a concussion after an accident..

Sign #3: Your Mood

Another sign of a concussion that many people experience after car accidents in particular are sudden mood changes when they have no existing history of them occurring. If you suddenly feel sad or angry for no reason this could also be an indication that you may have suffered a concussion.

Sign #4: Your Sleeping Patterns

If you want to make sure that you don't have a concussion after a car accident, you should pay particular attention to your sleeping patterns in the days following the event. If you suddenly find yourself sleeping a lot more than usual, or if you have a hard time sleeping when normally you get to bed at night just fine, you may have a concussion and should receive proper medical attention.

Sign #5: Increased Sensitivity

Another one of the most important signs of a concussion to pay attention to has to do with how you react to certain audible sensations after the crash versus how you reacted before. If you suddenly have a dramatically increased sensitivity to bright lights, loud noises or other distractions – particularly if that sensitivity leads to pain – you can take it as a sign that your injuries may have resulted in a concussion that should be treated immediately.

Treatment for a Concussion

Perhaps the most important thing to understand is that you should not attempt to treat a concussion on your own. In admittedly rare cases, a blood clot may form on the brain of a person who has been involved in this type of traumatic injury that can be fatal if left untreated. If you suspect that you or one of your passengers has received a concussion after a car accident, contact either your family health practitioner or go to the emergency room immediately for proper treatment and observation.

The emotional and financial issues that occur after a car accident can take a toll on anyone – to say nothing of how serious things can become if you or a loved one has developed signs of a concussion or other serious medical issues.
